The Water Will Come The Water Will Come

A never-ending struggle

The Water Will Come
Brief

Since the devastating North Sea flood of 1953, the Netherlands has invested heavily in its coastal defenses. Dykes have been strengthened, rivers have been widened and a complicated system of drainage ditches, canals and pumping stations has been erected to keep low-lying areas dry. In the Watersnoodmuseum, you’ll learn about the never-ending struggle with water from 1953 till now.

Approach

Caisson 4 is all about water awareness. Around the world, floods are increasing in frequency and intensity – from the fertile deltas of Southeast Asia to the coast of Mozambique, and from the hills of England to the mountain rivers of Peru. The Netherlands is also facing more extreme weather events, rising sea levels and climate change. These are forcing us to reconsider our struggle with water.

In multiple interactive installations, the power of water is shown. A 7-minute film projected on an 18-by-3.5-metre curved screen serves as an impressive introduction to the exhibition. A special film booth features the story of a woman who was hit by a tsunami with her family in Sri Lanka in 2004, which changed her life forever. In a large ‘sandbox’, advanced techniques (augmented reality) can be used to change water flows in a virtual landscape and see how that affects it.
