The 99 photographs in the new installation of the Gallery of Honour are each more than special in terms of artistic and social qualities. Together they form a timeline of 180 years of photography from the Netherlands. From the daguerreotypes of the 19th century via the mid 20th century masterpieces by Eva Besnyö and Ed van der Elsken to the contemporary works of Sanne de Wilde and Gillleam Trapenberg. The Gallery of Honour fills the entire first floor of the Santos Warehouse, the museum's new home.
The spatial concept places the works on individual carriers in a dynamic floorplan that exposes itself as a transparant maze. The panels are tension mounted between the ceiling and floor instead of being bolted or using screws. This is done to preserve the monumental status the building has received from the city council. The wooden panels float in a steel frame between these vertical clamps, giving the entire exhibition space more air. The panels are printed on oak in a dark green colour. Giving the exhibition a rich and almost royal signature, echoing the historical industrial heritage of Santos.
In addition to the exhibited photographs a centrally positioned black steel timeline, offers insight and context about the 180 years of photographic history. The timeline is designed as a slim and long stretching lightbox, that dynamically meanders through the lanscape of the panels. Using texts images and video, the technical, artistic and societal development of photography is explained to a wide audience.
