'The Europeans’ is a ten-year project exploring Europe's contemporary identity amid rising nationalism, populism, and authoritarianism. Photographer Rob Hornstra and writer Arnold van Bruggen travel across regions, documenting forgotten places and partnering with local media. Each visit culminates in an exhibition and publication, with the goal of creating a time capsule of 21st-century Europe, reflecting on its changing identity and future.
We have been working with Rob and Arnold for over ten years on other projects. For this multi-year project, we collaborated on the development of the project’s concept, consisting of regional publications and exhibitions – both off- and online.
For the publications, a simple framework visually keeps all separate regions together, while at the same time allowing them their own identity. Because accessibility was an important goal, the framework is also designed to be bilingual and fit both English and the local language of the region, aiming to engage in a dialogue with a broad local audience.
Each exhibition is designed based on the look-and-feel of the publication and is produced in collaboration with local cultural and media partners. The exhibitions are also published online (via Artsteps), where the photography and stories are available to interested parties across Europe.
"Europe is in a state of flux."
