It's no minor thing to create a book in which an artist’s work is presented in optima forma. It's an even bigger responsibility to honor and compile the artistic legacy of someone you never knew. As soon as we started working on this publication, we wanted it to befit Madeleine Berkhemer and her work: it's daring, passionate, full of extremes, humor, and with loads of class and style.
To Madeleine Berkhemer (1973-2019), sensuality and eroticism were fundamental elements of life. She used various art forms and techniques in her research into the power of the female body and how it evokes both lust and discomfort.
The richly illustrated book is set up as a triptych, reflecting MMM (Madeleine's alter egos Milly, Molly, and Mandy), the trilingualism of the texts, and Madeleine's often repeated statement that all good things come in three. We used the book's materialization as an important way to express its distinctive and unique character. Madeleine's filmed performative work is printed on very thin semi-transparent paper. Both to visually connect it to each other frame by frame, but also to underline the temporary and vulnerable aspect of it. The hard-covered Swiss binding and finishing fit the rough yet monumental oeuvre and the sudden interruption of Madeleine's life.
“Art should tease, please, seduce. It should make the viewer feel uncomfortable. Anything, as long as it doesn't leave people unmoved."
– Madeleine Berkhemer
