Netherlands is the second largest exporter in the world, right after the United States. This inspired photographer and documentary maker Kadir van Lohuizen to investigate the role of the Netherlands in the global food system and its effects. The result landed as an exhibition in the National Maritime Museum and was published in a photobook by Lannoo.
Working on such a big project with so much content, we started drafting a narrative and structure for the exhibition. While making an image edit together with Kadir, we also thought of ways to contextualize the photography with key facts and figures. By adding these different data-layers, both the elusiveness of the global food system is underlined while also helping visitors understand the subject better.
Just like the food system itself, everything in this exhibition is big. Large prints appear on the wall and on freestanding shelving-units. They are combined with an even bigger digital projection per country, resulting in a beautiful interplay of photography and moving image. Together, these large surfaces of image form the visual landscape of the exhibition.
For the graphic design, we were inspired by the architecture and marketing of food from the supermarket and chose a strong and outspoken graphic language for both exhibition and publication. The neon colors underscore the impact and urgency of the topic, resulting in an energetic design with positive impact that inspires to reflect ánd act.
Last but not least, we wanted to make this exhibition as sustainable as possible; both in the choice of materials as in the production itself. We used modular shelving units as the carriers of the exhibition, that will be reused in the food industry after the exhibition ends.
